AYR Night at the McCain Campaign
Wednesday, May 28 starting at 6:30 pm

Good Morning

Wow, what a few months, and the AYRs have been REALLY busy.  I thought I would give you a synopsis of what we have done so far. Look out for what we are going to do the NEXT few months.

In addition to our monthly meetings with speakers which we have on the first Monday of every month at Murphy's Grand Irish Pub in Alexandria, we had our first Trivia Night Competition.  Everyone had fun and we found out the AYRs are really competitive!

We have continued our networking with young professionals from around the Washington, DC area with happy hours at locations such as, O'Connell's, King Street Blues, Vermillion's and Pat Troy's Ireland's Own.

In April and May we collected food for the ALIVE! food bank in Alexandria that was hit hard by a burglary.  The AYRs have collected over 100 lbs of food for ALIVE! and The Carpenter's Shelter in Alexandria.

We also partnered with the Alexandria Republican City Committee on an Armed Forces Day Rally where our guest speaker was Orson Swindle, a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Marines and an ex-POW who spent over 6 year in Hanoi with Senator McCain. At the Rally we helped collect items for care packages to be set to troops overseas.  Having put out two huge boxes to hold the care package materials, by the end of the Rally, these boxes were over flowing with items for our soldiers.

Finally the AYRs have begun our AYR Nights at the McCain Campaign.  We have been volunteering at the McCain HQ every other week, helping the campaign in any way possible, calling supporters to set up grassroots efforts in Virginia, as well as Ohio and Kentucky.  We have also helped in setting up the national and Mid-Atlantic headquarters.

The AYRs (with AFCYRs) were also given a great opportunity to volunteer at a meeting for all of the McCain and RNC staff regarding the election.  We were able to stay and listen leaders from both the campaign and the RNC like, Mike Duncan, Frank Donatelli, Rick Davis, Charlie Black, Roberta McCain (Sen. McCain's mother), and others.

As always, the AYRs are here to help YOU find opportunities to get involved in Republican politics. We know you are busy advancing your careers, social lives, and families. We want to make sure that when you have time there is an activity available for you. Check out the AYR website at www.AlexYRs.org and our Calendar/Events page for what we are planning in the next few months.

If there is something you are interested in participating in and have not had time to find a way to get involved, email me and we can see about helping you get involved

Article of the Week
Meet the AYRs!
Andrea Stults Ardelean

It is time to meet one of our New AYRs.  Andrea started coming to a AYR Night at the McCain campaign and has been getting more and more involved.  She has been keeping our AYR Facebook page up to date and is now helping out with out getting speakers.

She was just appointed to the Speakers Committee for the AYRs.

So meet Andrea!

1. How long have you been in Alexandria and the surrounding area
I have been in the D.C. area for seven years – and have periodically lived in Alexandria. Most recently, I moved from Kingstowne to Mount Vernon, near Ft. Belvior.

2. Age: 26

3. Where did you go to college?
Ironic that my father, currently a professor, is an advocate and spent a career overseeing international graduate programs across Asia & Europe. My entire family is involved in academic advancement. I was a high school drop-out (from boarding school) but later went back. Have worked since then.

4. Where do you work & what is your job?
For two years I've been the Barter/Special Sections Coordinator at The Washington Times. This summer though, I'd like to get involved  continuing to volunteer in political efforts to support the GOP.

5. Why you became a Republican?
It's multi-faceted, but my family lived in Manila during the attempted coups of the 80's. Politics were not discussed in our household, but as a child, I saw what was going on in the world and began to agree with issues on national security, our military. America's global presence is essential.

I was adopted, am a minority and female in the U.S. I've been able to (on my own!) make a life for myself.  I moved back to the States at 19. With a high school education I started out in retail, worked my way up, learned how to invest, and even bought my own home at 25!

I denounce socialized programs but uphold merit, a free-market and the Republicans' collaboration with faith-based initiative programs which facilitates a nation overflowing with opportunity.

6. Your first reaction upon coming to an AYR meeting/event.
Wished I'd known sooner this was a way to contribute.  My goal is to give back to the GOP. AYR is an amazing way to network, meet others and have a lot of fun getting involved!

7. First campaign experience
This year at the McCain HQ! Have also volunteered at the polls in Arlington.

8. Most memorable/exciting/crazy moment on the campaign trail?
Polls: In Arlington, working at the polls, people were shocked I was a Republican. It was funny to see the looks on their faces. But I'm thankful we are a country full of different choices and are able to state our views and support our candidates.

Trivia

Last week's questions seemed a bit difficult.  Ready to try again?  Let's find out!

1) What Vice President won the Nobel Peace Prize the same year he was elected to office?

2) What Congressman and Vice President helped found the Republican Party in Indiana?

3) Which First Lady did Will Rogers refer to as "public female favorite number one"?

4) Who swore Calvin Coolidge into office after President Harding died?

5) The song "A Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight" was used during which eventual president's campaign in 1904?

Anyone interested in answers??  Well you can contemplate the answers and see if you can get them right next week in the newsletter.  If, however, you have no patience and must know the answers now, check out the answers here!
