Welcome to the New Year with the Alexandria Young Republicans!
From the look of things, we are in for a busy and VERY exciting year. As you all know, the Presidential race is off and running. The first caucuses have been interesting with Gov. Huckabee winning Iowa and Gov. Romney winning Wyoming.
Who will win New Hampshire? Come out to Murphy's tonight, have a drink with us and let's discuss.
We are having our regular Meeting TONIGHT at Murphy's Irish Pub (713 King St., Alexandria) in the upstairs bar. Come out at 7:00 p.m. for a drink and the meeting and speaker starts at 7:30 p.m.
To keep up-to-date on ALL of the events, keep the AYR website (www.alexYRs.org) on your list of your favorites and check it often.
I HOPE YOU ARE EXCITED AS I AM -- SEE YOU TONIGHT!
Presidential Race in Virginia
(and Other Campaigns)
Virginia is going to be very important in the Presidential race this year. Which way will she go, Republican or Democrat?
I KNOW you have an opinion and a definite choice on how Virginia should vote. What are YOU going to do to help your vision come true?
AYR's Plan:
The AYRs are going to work really hard to have as many opportunities as possible available so that WHEN you have time, you can come help out at the campaign of your choice -- Presidential, Senatorial, or Congressional. When events come up, I will make sure that you know about them and have an opportunity to get involved!
Presidential Primary:
For the Primary, AYR members helping out with some of the campaigns have agreed to be our liasons to the Thompson, Romney, Huckabee, and Guiliani campaigns. We are still looking for members who are volunteering with the McCain and Paul campaigns who would like to be our liason.
Our Presidential Campaign Liasons have all agreed to let us know when their campaigns are looking for volunteers. Providing us with information about the who, what, when where and whys of the specific events so that you can get involved as you want.
Senatorial & 8th District Congressional Campaigns:
We are also looking for AYRs who are interested in being involved in the Senatorial and Congressional campaigns. If you want to find a way to get involved in either of these campaigns, this would be a great way to make that contact. It gives you a great reason for making that original cold call to find out what is happening. Let me know if you are interested!
AYR 2008 Board Elections TONIGHT!
Well, since it is election time, we are having the AYR elections tonight.
We have three people who have said that they are interested in being on the executive board. Luckily they all chose different positions.
Dena Kozanas is running for Vice Chairman, Stephen Driekorn is running for Secretary, and Mary-Margaret Smith is running for Treasurer.
Since there are no contested races, we will vote them in by voice vote. Yeah, a new board!!
Who is going to be Chairman? GREAT QUESTION!
You might have noticed, but no one seems to want the job of AYR Chairman.
Shocking, people, just shocking!
First, to allay any fears, the AYR bylaws state that "officers shall hold office until successors are elected and take office." Therefore, I will continue to serve you as Chairman (and enjoy it) until such time as a new Chairman is elected and takes office.
At the February meeting, we will vote on a motion to amend the bylaws removing the two year term limit for officers (see the proposed motion below).
If the amendment passes, I will run for the AYR Chairman for one more year (umm, one more year and one year only). By the way, if it doesn't pass, I won't run and we will find another chairman!
Chairman's Commentary:
Over the past two years, I have had a great time serving the AYRs. Hopefully you have all enjoyed the campaigning, happy hours, speakers, events, parties, emails, paintball and other opportunities that the AYRs have had. I would enjoy continuing helping make these these opportunities available for the AYRs, if you want them to continue. I will, of course, change a few things, add new opportunities and hopefully give anyone who is interested a chance to be and do what they want in Alexandria, Virginia and National politics.
If you are interested in running for Chairman, or are just interested in trying to be more involved in the AYRs, please contact me, Brenda (chair@alexYRs.org).
Proposed Amendment to AYR Bylaws
Dena Kozanas has proposed an amendment to the AYR bylaws. The proposed amendment states:
Strike "No officer may serve more than two consecutive full terms in the same office." from Article IV.
Article XII. Amendments and Bylaws
Section 1: Submission. A proposed amendment to these bylaws shall be submitted in writing to the Secretary at any Regular meeting to be presented to the members. It shall be placed as an agenda item for the next Regular meeting and voted upon at that time.
This proposal was sent to the Secretary in writing. It will be presented at the January regular meeting. Therefore, we will place it on the agenda for discussion and a vote at the February meeting.
If you have any questions about this proposed amendment, please contact Dena Kozanas at treasurer@alexYRs.org.
